02 — Who we are
Psychodynamic and integrative. Registered, supervised, insured.
Bristol Counselling and Psychotherapy is a team of professionally trained counsellors and psychotherapists. We work with adults and young people all over the UK, face to face, online or by telephone.
Some of our counsellors work psychodynamically, looking at how earlier experience shapes the present. Others work integratively, drawing on more than one approach to fit the person in front of them. What the practice asks of everyone is the same: ongoing supervision, insurance, and a code of ethics they answer to.
Sessions are arranged to suit each client, and we offer short and long term therapy, meeting once a week. We welcome clients from all cultures, backgrounds and ages.

05 — Questions
Four questions people ask first.
Answered in the practice’s own words. More questions are answered on the practice FAQ page.
01 How are counselling and psychotherapy different?
While the terms’ usage sometimes overlaps, there is a distinction. When focusing on a single issue, counselling is offered, typically on a short-term basis, whereas psychotherapy typically requires a greater amount of time. The latter allows the development of an environment and relationship that can deal with a variety of issues, or those that require extensive analysis to support an improved self-awareness and wellbeing.
02 What happens at the initial session?
Our initial session allows us to assess whether we are the most appropriate counsellor for you. We will consider whether there is an appropriate connection that could support the positive collaboration required for healthy development. It is also an opportunity for you to judge your feelings and to ask questions, so that you can gauge your comfort working closely with us.
03 What is the length of each session?
Sessions last fifty minutes, once a week at the same time.
04 How long does counselling last?
The length of the counselling term depends on the client’s individual needs. Short term counselling may be appropriate, typically dealing with a specific issue and lasting six to twelve sessions. Alternatively, we offer ongoing psychotherapy, which is treated as open-ended, accommodating a greater scope of issues and goals. These sessions end when the client is confident they no longer require support to manage their life.
Moving on from counselling is a significant point, and it is approached with care so that the client leaves at the right time.
